Top Augmented Reality trends in Retail

New approaches to user experience have emerged as a result of advances in augmented reality. The retail industry is one of the biggest market segments in the modern world and the key element in the world’s economy.

Here are the top AR trends in retail to watch in 2023.

1. Improves In-store Experience
Using AR apps on mobile devices, customers can now quickly access product details, try out varied colors of the desired products, and make a purchase decision faster without actually trying each one out.

The popular brand Lacoste gained much traction when they implemented this AR feature to bring their sports shoe colors to life!

2. Shopping Sizeable Products
Furniture and electronics brands are now highly using AR to improve their point-of-sales by letting their customers view the size, color, and look of the products in their selected space!

3. WebAR
Make your website content interactive. Shoppers today dislike skimming through large content to understand product features.

With WebAR, retailers can implement top AR features on websites so that customers can view the styles and fittings of clothes and accessories in augmented reality without downloading any further apps.

4. Try Before you Buy
Virtual try-ons powered by AR allow customers to try products without physically visiting the stores.

Top eyewear and cloth stores are now letting their customers visualize how they look in different products right from home before purchasing them.

5. Experiential Marketing
AR’s interactive visualization features enable retailers to entice a consumer from product consideration to product purchase through experiential marketing.

Top beauty brands are now allowing customers to experience scientifically validated skin assessments and photo-realistic makeup simulations.

6. AR Products Configurators
Retailers can create interactive product catalogs that display each product in a digital format that customers can explore.

Nike’s sneaker configurator employs AR technology that allows customers to personalize their sneakers extensively by browsing product catalogs, is a fascinating example of this trend!

Benefits of Augmented Reality in Retail

AR can be used to enhance the shopping experience by providing customers with an interactive and personalized way of engaging with products. Here are some of the benefits of using AR in retail:

1. Customer engagement and experiential retail
As retailers shift toward an emphasis on in-person experiences, many brands are leveraging augmented reality to create immersive shopping experiences that drive engagement, increase customer education, and further curiosity among shoppers.

2. Sales and conversion lifts
Whether through in-store displays and activations, virtual try-on experiences, or virtual navigation, augmented reality can significantly impact both in-store and online conversion rates and make a meaningful difference in your bottom line.

According to Shopify internal data, merchants who add 3D content to their stores see a 94% conversion lift, on average.

3. Contactless experiences
In many ways, augmented reality can replace the need to physically interact with a product. Instead, users can save time, effort, and even money by virtually evaluating the photo-realistic representations and viewing the product from different angles.

4. Sharable & trackable content
Not only are AR-powered filters, displays, and applications fun to interact with, but they also serve as powerful organic marketing tools. Take Ulta Beauty’s filters on Snapchat, for example.

In January 2022, Ulta released shoppable AR filters on Snapchat, allowing users to swipe through and take photos with virtual makeup looks.

The global Augmented Reality market is expected to reach 461.25 billion US dollars by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.50%. According to Google consumer AR survey, 66% of people are interested in using augmented reality technology for help when shopping. It indicates that a significant portion of the population is open to trying this technology. This is a positive sign for retailers and manufacturers who are investing in AR solutions to enhance the shopping experience for their customers.

Augmented Reality App

RC Al Mana were looking to create an interactive and engaging experience for some special guests and for the public to display their latest innovations and construction projects.

A101 assisted in helping designing a printable brochure, which is also digitally available that showcases their work reel. In addition to this 3D renderings and modelling were created which replicate the exact construction that was finished by RC Al Mana. These renderings and models are then displayed throughout the brochure, in addition to interactive elements using augmented reality that users can view on their personal phone.

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that enhances a user’s perception of the real world by overlaying digital information such as images, videos, text, and animations on top of it. This information is often displayed in real time and is intended to provide additional context or information about the user’s environment. The user can interact with the digital information, allowing them to view it from different angles or manipulate it in some way. AR can be accessed through a variety of devices including smartphones, tablets, and headsets, and is used in a wide range of applications including gaming, education, and industry.

Popular examples of AR applications include Pokémon GO, Snapchat filters, Navigation, and Advertising.

Innovation Labs and Other Technologies

An Innovation Lab is loosely defined as collaboration within or between companies and other organizations, such as NGOs, government entities or think tanks.

Its sole purpose is to solve problems, obstacles or challenges – termed ‘breakthrough solutions’ – by fostering and developing creative and innovative ideas, in particular by using the latest technologies. Your business can set up its own cross-functional Innovation Lab in-house or, more ideally, enlist the assistance of a specialist agency that is up-to-date with the latest global developments within this space, in order to drive the process consistently. Such a team would then review the challenges or requirements outlined, help your company to refine the requisite goals, conduct research, and brainstorm and present innovative solutions and suggest the best way to apply them. As always, clear objectives with a dedicated purpose will provide a road map to a satisfactory outcome. Methodologies include open source innovation, metrics, design-focused and human-design thinking, crowdsourcing and experimental testing and trials. Some of the current new areas and trends in technology solutions being incorporated into the scope of Innovation Labs include Cashless Payments, the Internet of Things (IoT), beacon technology (Indoor navigation and tracking) and blockchain technology,  just to name just a few. Innovation Labs have recently become a highly popular way for those seeking to tap into inventive thinking, and when involving a consultant agency, typically transcend from ideation into final implementation and execution.

Considering Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Recent years have seen an acceleration of options open to marketers in the digital realm.

Emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) can help your audience to visualize and interact with virtual environments or objects using either a headset, glasses or a simple mobile phone. By utilizing a dedicated team consisting of 3D designers and specialized engineers, the development of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) apps for multiple hardware, including Hololens, Magic Leap or even Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, as well as mobile handsets on iOS and Android has become possible. These native developments should be done with high-level 3D graphics and rendered with the famous and award-winning game engines Unity and Unreal 3D.

Are you a digital marketer looking for a new way to promote your business? Perhaps it’s time to immerse yourself in a 3D realistic environment and interact with Virtual Reality (VR). Many case studies reveal the benefits of VR in fields such as education, healthcare, military, manufacturing, games, real estate, retail, events and activations, HSE, oil and gas, engineering, video, entertainment and more.
